Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

This movie made me at turns both angry and sad.

To start with the pros: It did look fantastic. And the kids were all good, as were most of the grown-ups. (Yay for David Kelly) I especially liked the first section, before they entered the factory.

Then the cons: Johnny Depp was the main one. Gene Wilder was slightly creepy, but Depp crossed over the creepy line, coming off as seedy. And seriously, what was with the latex gloves? A little off-putting, to say the least. And he acted pretty much the entire thing with just his mouth, but not in a subtle way.
But my biggest problem was with the... backstory. They took all the mystery if the character of Wonka, and explained it with "Daddy was a dentist, wouldn't let me eat sweets." I mean, for feck's sake people, half of the greatness of the character was his sheer bizarreness. We didn't know why he started the factory, and we didn't need to know. Giving him a backstory, especially such a pedestrian one, ruins all of that. Don't even get me started on the ending.

Not that it was all bad. Some of the dialoge was great, the Oompa Loompa(s) were good, and it was a decent afternoon at the cinema. But I expected more from Tim Burton, frankly

I loved it. It was much closer to the book, and I thought Depp's Wonka was more realistic. Wonka is supposed to be a maladjusted, socially crippled genius. He's like a big, gawky kid. I rarely gush, but this movie makes it neccesary. And Christopher Lee makes me happy.
i agree.
But didn't you think giving him such a stupid motivation was ridiculous? And the book ends with them shooting off in the elevator, as did the original film. And Dahl didn't like the original as he thought it was too Wonka-centric. This film is even more Wonka-centric, therefor I don't see how they think it was closer to what Dahl would have wnated.
Honestly, and this is uncommon for me, I didn't think too much about that. I just left this movie feeling happy, and didn't question it beyond that.
i actually didn't find gene wilder creepy ever. even in the boat scene, which is terrifying, HE isn't creepy.

the thing i liked about depp's performance is that for the most part he's like a big kid (you're all SHORT aren't you) but he is excessively creepy for snatches. just little snatches though, almost like you think you were imagining him being creepy. the time i can think of most strongly is after he greets them and they're first walking down the entrance hallway. very eerie.
i didn't see any more mouth acting than he normally does, can you possibly elaborate?

i agree that parts of the backstory were a bit weird, but i liked it in general. because it's just sort of neat that you see a reason for an obsession. most obsessions have some sort of reason.
Most of the action in his performance was focused around changing the way his lips were pursed, or the way he smiled. He looked pretty Depp-like when his mouth was closed and relaxed, but for most of it, he just had this one-note, cyanide-reminiscent grin.
And I prefered not knowing his motivation.
yeah, but i think that's just a johnny depp talking thing. he does it in pirates, ninth gate, even edward scissorhands and when he talks in interviews. maybe he has a muscle that we don't, lol.
i can kind of see what you mean, about how the backstory took the mystery out of his character.. i keep trying not to compare the two wonkas, but when it comes to them, gene wilder's version was much more happy-weird than johnny depp's version. maybe they thought that if they let psychocreepydeppwonka run rampant, that wouldn't be good, so they worked in a sort of human side to him?
